Flip Festival 08

Labels:
Flip festival came and went, but either it's improving every year, or I'm just getting more from it, because this year seemed even more worthwile. Osbert Parker, Portfolio advice, Ninja Theory, and the various Open Shorts were all worth the ticket price alone.

Please excuse the dodgy photo of Osbert Parker, I like to think the camera couldn't focus on him because he was emitting raw inspiration. For anyone reading this who doesn't know of Osbert Parker, please take a look at some of his work here.

I really admire the way he sucesfully uses mixed media animation, combining inspiration from other art forms, and styles of film that he pastiches down to a T. Being interested in film and art, It's exciting to see someone combining aspects of this that they like in such a unique way. he's even got a few Svankmajer-esque scenes in there, without it being too abstract or surreal.

The guys at Ninja theory (heavenly sword developers) had some interesting things to say about the process of animating for a game. The idea of blocking out a scene with basic camera movements taken from storyboards, means you can see what areas of a scene need the most focus when creating it. I still think Heavenly sword is one of the better games on the PS3 simply because you can tell the people that worked on it really cared about what they were making, and it shows.

That's all I'll talk about for now as I don't like long posts but I'll mention the open shorts when I've got time as well.
