We went to London recently for a all nighter film marathon at a cinema, sort of like staying in london overnight for much less and getting to watch films as well. Whilst there we decided to pay a visit to the V&A exhibition "Cold war modern" which I have to say is one of the best exhibitions I've been to. I even liked it better than the modernism one a few years back.
Cold war modern explained in detail the events of the cold war and how they sculpted the visual work that was going on at the time. This included propoganda posters, anti-coldwar posters and paintings. Sculptures and short films, fashion, buildings, spacesuits, everything. This was an era I didn't experience and the exhibition made me feel like I'd lived through it. Some highlights were the Richard Hamilton painting "$he",

depicting a woman in front of a fridge that seems to be leaking blood. A reference to people seeing the kitchen as the battleground for the cold war. If that slightly confuses you then get yourself down to the cold war modern exhibition to be enlightened. From that exhibition I also found out about these guys:
-Enrico Baj (interesting human forms)
-Alexander Zhitomirsky(a appealing collage artist)
-Jean Dubuffet (good at depicting busy scenes full of life)
We also visited the Francis Bacon Exhibition at the Tate. We had high hopes for this exhibition and not knowing a whole lot about the range of his work I was a bit dissapointed by the selection. It seemed like they couldn't decided what to put in and had included everything, as there were some paintings that looked almost identical to the three previous. That said, it was impressive to see his work in person, I didn't realise just how large some of them were (as tall as me).

His work didn't seem to change a whole lot throught his life as well, painting the same sort of image over and over. I've also been conditioned to be scared of this imagery from playing to much silent hill, of which Francis Bacon's work was a massive influence.
that's enough for now and there's still stuff I haven't posted about.
